SaveCrowsNest.com-
-Official PRESS RELEASE-
Date: 4/19/2004
SaveCrow'sNest.com is concerned about recent events regarding the potential sale of the 4,000 acre Crow's Nest peninsula in Stafford to a large scale home builder. Our organization is announcing immediate plans to launch a voter initiated petition placing a bond referendum on the November ballot. If approved by Stafford voters, the county would be authorized to purchase this environmentally sensitive wildlife habitat. It makes sound business sense to preserve this parcel as it will cost residents far less to save Crows Nest than if the area is developed into an Aquia Harbour sized subdivision off two-lane Brooke Road in rural Stafford. This preservation effort will also ensure that 20% or more of the existing by-right development in Stafford never happens.
While the movement to turn Crow's Nest into a nature preserve enjoys wide-spread public support, to-date, we have only heard three supervisors publicly express their commitment to support and vote for a resolution calling for a November 2004 park bond referendum. Since SaveCrow'sNest.com first announced the idea of a bond referendum on our web site on February 14, 2004, a majority of the Board of Supervisors have not voted to hold this special election placing this initiative on the ballot. The owners of Crow's Nest have entered into an agreement to sell this unique and historically significant piece of land to Toll Brothers. This mega-developer, which planned to construct homes at Valley Forge, recently announced plans to build "luxury" homes at Chancellorsville battlefield in Spotsylvania County, the historic site it now owns.
SaveCrow'sNest.com looks forward to working with the Board of Supervisors and other groups to approve a bond referendum. We believe that this is an appropriate use of bond indebtedness and is in the best short and long term financial interests of county taxpayers, our children, visitors, and future generations. We also believe that the selling price the owners might agree to will be substantially offset by other Federal, State and Local entities interested in contributing to the preservation of Crows Nest. Please contact Paul Milde at Savecrowsnest.com for additional information on how you can help save Crows Nest.
